Tsukiji Outer Market

築地場外市場

Although the wholesale tuna auctions moved to Toyosu in 2018, the Tsukiji Outer Market remains Tokyo's most vibrant and photogenic food market, with over 400 vendors selling fresh seafood, tamagoyaki, wagyu, kitchenware, and street food.

The Tsukiji Outer Market (Tsukiji Jogai Shijo) is the remaining retail and restaurant component of what was once the world's largest fish market. While the wholesale tuna auctions moved to the Toyosu Market in 2018, the outer market's network of narrow alleys and stalls has continued to operate at the original Tsukiji location, and it has only grown more accessible to visitors as the wholesale traffic cleared out.

Over 400 vendors line the market's compact streets, selling everything from fresh sashimi and grilled seafood skewers to tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelette), wagyu beef croquettes, and seasonal fruits. The best strategy is to arrive early (7:00-8:00) when the stalls are freshly stocked and the crowds are manageable, and to graze through small portions rather than sitting down at any single restaurant. For photographers, the morning light through the market's covered alleys and the visual density of the stalls make Tsukiji one of the most rewarding documentary photography subjects in Tokyo.
