Osaka Museum of History

The Osaka Museum of History occupies a striking modern building adjacent to Osaka Castle Park, and its 10-floor chronological exhibition traces the city from the 7th-century Naniwa Palace through the Edo-period merchant culture to the modern metropolis. The recommended approach is to take the elevator to the top floor and work down, beginning with a life-size reconstruction of the ancient Naniwa Palace court that establishes Osaka's role as Japan's earliest capital before the move to Nara and Kyoto.
