Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

東京都写真美術館

Japan's only public museum dedicated entirely to photography and moving images. Its permanent collection spans 150 years of photographic history, and the rotating exhibitions frequently feature both Japanese and international masters.

The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (TOP Museum) occupies three exhibition floors in the Yebisu Garden Place complex and is the only public museum in Japan devoted exclusively to photography and moving images. The permanent collection holds over 36,000 works spanning daguerreotypes to contemporary digital prints, and the rotating exhibitions — typically three running simultaneously across the floors — consistently feature significant retrospectives of both Japanese and international photographers.

For visiting photographers, the museum shop is almost as important as the galleries: it carries an unusually deep stock of Japanese photography monographs, many of which are difficult to find outside Japan. The building's location in Yebisu Garden Place also makes it a natural stop on a broader Ebisu-Daikanyama photography walk, with the Daikanyama T-Site bookstore fifteen minutes away on foot.
