Isetan Shinjuku

伊勢丹 新宿店

Isetan Shinjuku is Japan's most influential department store for fashion buying. Its menswear floors in particular have shaped Japanese fashion taste for decades, and the store's buyer selections consistently surface Japanese and international designers before they break globally.

Isetan Shinjuku occupies a prominent Art Deco building on Shinjuku-dori and has operated since 1933, building a reputation as the department store that shapes Japanese fashion taste rather than simply following it. The store's buying team is legendary in the industry for surfacing emerging designers early — brands like Sacai, Comme des Garcons, and Thom Browne all received significant early retail exposure through Isetan before achieving global prominence.

The main building houses womenswear and the depachika (basement food hall), while the Men's building across the street concentrates menswear across six floors, from casual streetwear through tailored suiting to accessories. For international visitors, the most efficient approach is to start at the Men's building (less crowded, more focused), then cross to the main building's depachika for food shopping. The tax-free counter on the ground floor processes refunds for purchases totaling over 5,000 yen before tax; expect a 10-15 minute wait during busy periods.
