The permanent collection includes Buddhist sculptures spanning from the Asuka period (6th-7th century) through the Kamakura period, with particularly strong holdings of wooden and bronze statues that document the evolution of Japanese sculptural techniques.

The museum's annual Shosoin Exhibition, held each autumn, is one of the most important cultural events in Japan — it displays objects from the Shosoin Imperial Repository at Todai-ji, treasures from the 8th century that are normally kept in climate-controlled storage and are shown publicly only during this brief window. The museum sits in Nara Park between Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha shrine, making it a natural stop on a Nara history circuit.
