Nishijin Textile Center

西陣織会館

The Nishijin Textile Center showcases Kyoto's 1,200-year-old silk-weaving tradition with live weaving demonstrations, kimono fashion shows, and a gallery of historic textiles — the best single introduction to Japanese textile craft.

The Nishijin Textile Center is the public-facing showcase of Kyoto's Nishijin silk-weaving district, where the art of jacquard silk weaving has been practiced for over 1,200 years. The center offers live weaving demonstrations on traditional looms, daily kimono fashion shows featuring seasonal textile designs, and a gallery of historic Nishijin-ori textiles that illustrates the evolution of Japanese textile craft from Heian court robes to contemporary fashion applications.

For fashion visitors, the center provides the clearest single-stop introduction to the material culture behind Japanese fashion — understanding Nishijin weaving illuminates why Kyoto remains central to Japanese textile innovation, and why kimono fabric prices range from 50,000 to 5,000,000 yen. Visitors can also book a kimono wearing experience (advance reservation recommended), which includes full dressing with obi and accessories. The center is free to enter and sits in northern Kyoto near Imadegawa, making it easy to combine with the Imperial Palace and the surrounding Nishijin neighborhood's smaller artisan workshops.
