Ota Memorial Museum of Art

太田記念美術館

The Ota Memorial Museum houses one of the finest private collections of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in Japan, with over 14,000 works including masterpieces by Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro, and Sharaku, exhibited in rotating monthly shows.

The Ota Memorial Museum of Art sits in a quiet side street behind Omotesando, just a few minutes walk from the Harajuku shopping district, and it houses one of the most important private collections of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in Japan. The collection of over 14,000 works was assembled by Seizo Ota V, a former president of the Toho Mutual Life Insurance Company, and includes masterpieces by Katsushika Hokusai (including impressions from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series), Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, and Toshusai Sharaku.

The museum rotates its exhibitions monthly, each organized around a theme (seasons, actors, landscapes, women of Edo) that draws from different corners of the collection. This means no two visits will show the same prints, but it also means you need to check the schedule — the museum closes for installation periods, typically during the last days of each month. The space is intimate, with gallery rooms designed for close viewing. Combined with Meiji Jingu and the Harajuku fashion district, the Ota Museum makes for a rewarding cultural anchoring point in a Shibuya-area half-day.
