The Kyoto National Museum (Kyohaku) is one of Japan's four national museums and holds the most comprehensive collection of art and artifacts produced in Kyoto across a millennium — from Heian-period Buddhist painting through Momoyama-era screens to Edo-period ceramics and textiles. The permanent collection includes designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties displayed on rotation, meaning repeat visits reveal different works each time.

The main exhibition space is the Heisei Chishinkan wing, a Yoshio Taniguchi-designed building completed in 2014 that provides clean, modern gallery spaces organized by medium (painting, sculpture, ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork, textiles). The original Meiji-era brick building hosts special exhibitions that draw from the museum's own holdings and international loans. The museum sits in eastern Kyoto near Sanjusangen-do (Hall of 1,001 Statues), making it natural to pair both in a single half-day.
