Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane)

思い出横丁

Omoide Yokocho is a narrow network of postwar-era alleyways packed with tiny yakitori, ramen, and izakaya joints immediately north of Shinjuku Station. Its atmospheric density and charcoal smoke make it one of Tokyo's most photographed nightlife destinations.

Omoide Yokocho — literally "Memory Lane," though locals and guidebooks also use the less romantic nickname "Piss Alley" — is a narrow network of postwar-era alleyways immediately north of Shinjuku Station. The roughly 60 tiny establishments here specialize primarily in yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), with a scattering of ramen shops, motsu-nabe (offal hotpot) joints, and standing bars. Most seats face a counter with a direct view of the grill, and many shops accommodate no more than 6-10 customers at a time.

The atmosphere is the point: charcoal smoke drifting between buildings, paper lanterns casting warm light on wooden facades, and the compressed social energy of dozens of tiny restaurants operating elbow-to-elbow in alleys barely wide enough for two people to pass. For photographers, evening blue-hour through the first hour after dark is the optimal window — the lanterns are lit, the grills are smoking, and the crowds provide human-scale depth. For diners, the food is honest and affordable: expect 1,000-2,000 yen for a satisfying yakitori and beer session.
